The Senate rejected the Biden bill for the 61 billion in Ukraine
Senate Republicans blocked Ukraine aid bill after failing to secure border compromises they sought in return.
The $110 billion package included $61 billion for Ukraine, as well as funds for Israel and aid for Gaza.
The White House has warned that US funds for Ukraine may soon run out.
Ukraine has expressed concern that this failure to secure more US aid would mean there is “very high probability” that the war with Russia will be lost.
While Republican members are generally in favor of aid to Ukraine, there is an effort to use the issue to address growing concerns about the US’s southern border.
In the Senate, the vote to pass the bill was 49 to 51, short of the 60-vote threshold needed to move forward.
Republicans insist that any aid to Ukraine be tied to sweeping US immigration and asylum reforms.
Earlier on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden said he was “willing to make significant compromises on the border” in order to pass the aid bill.
“This cannot wait,” he said, adding that “Republicans in Congress are willing to give Putin the biggest gift he could hope for.”
