Britain, the European Union and more than ten other countries, including Australia and Canada, are calling on Israel to take immediate and concrete measures to address Jewish settler violence against Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

“The increase in extremist settler violence against Palestinians is unacceptable,” the joint statement released today by the British government said.

Precautionary measures must now be taken to ensure the effective and immediate protection of Palestinian communities“, the announcement states.

Yesterday, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said those responsible for violence against Palestinians in the West Bank would not be allowed to enter Britain. The European Union plans to implement similar measures.

“Israel’s failure to protect Palestinians and prosecute extremist settlers has created an environment of near-universal impunity in which settler violence has reached unprecedented levels,” the joint statement said.

This situation “undermines security in the West Bank and the region and threatens the prospects for sustainable peace.”

The announcement mentions from the beginning of October, settlers have committed 343 violent attacks killing 8 Palestinian civilians, injuring more than 83 and forcing 1,026 Palestinians to flee their homes.
