Much of Australia is suffering from a heat wave and authorities are warning of an extreme risk of bushfires in several states.

High temperatures are forecast for Western Australia, New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory today, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said on its website.

The heatwave is increasing the risk of wildfires at a time already considered “high risk” due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is associated with devastating fires, cyclones and drought.

In the Western Australian town of Fitzroy Crossing, the mercury is forecast to climb to 46C today, five degrees above the average for the season.

In New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, more than 50 fire fronts remained active today and about 700 firefighters were trying to extinguish them.

Australian authorities have long warned of the extreme risk of wildfires this summer. The “Black Summer” of 2019-2020 had reduced an area the size of Turkey to ashes and 33 people had lost their lives due to fires.
