Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had a telephone conversation yesterday, Sunday evening, with EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varkheli.

The Turkish minister asked the European Union to adopt a fairer and more prudent attitude towards Turkeyaccording to Turkish diplomatic sources.

During the telephone conversation with Commissioner Varkheli, Hakan Fidan expressed her disapproval of the fact that the joint statement on Turkey-EU relations prepared by the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borel was not discussed in Summit meeting of the EU that took place last week, contrary to what was planned, and was referred to the next Summit.

Hakan Fidan is reported to have pointed out to the EU commissioner that “in today’s world, where global challenges are intensifying, the EU should act with a strategic understanding and promote relations with Turkey.”

The Turkish minister reminded that Turkey expects the European Union to receive concrete meters as soon as possible in matters such as updating it Customs Unionthe strengthening of investments and the provision of facilities for granting entry visas to Turkish citizens in the Schengen Area.

Fidan and Vargheli also discussed the Conclusions on the Enlargement of the General Affairs Council held on 12 December and the Conclusions of the EU Summit held on 14-15 December.
