President Joe Biden pardoned thousands of people convicted of marijuana use and simple possession on federal lands and in the District of Columbia, the White House said Friday in an effort to fix racial disparities in the justice system.

Biden also pardoned 11 people serving what the White House called “disproportionately long” sentences for non-violent drug offenses.

According to the American president, his actions will help make the “promise of equal justice” a reality.

“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed unnecessary barriers to employment, housing and educational opportunities,” Biden said. “Too many lives have been lost because of our failed approach to marijuana. It is time to correct these mistakes,” he emphasized.

Biden reiterated his call for governors and local leaders to take similar steps to expunge marijuana convictions.

“Just as no one should be in a federal prison solely because of the use or possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local or state prison for that reason,” Biden concluded.
