The presidents of Egypt and Iran they discussed the recent developments in Gaza, but also the prospect of restoring diplomatic relations between their two countries, in what Iranian television described today as, as their first telephone contact.
According to the TV report, Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi called his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
The two leaders met for the first time in November, on the sidelines of an extraordinary Arab-Islamic conference held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“Raishi stated that Iran is ready to provide all the capabilities it has to stop the genocide of the Zionist government (in Gaza), but also to send aid to the Palestinians,” Iranian state TV reported, adding that it is the first telephone conversation between the two men.
Relations between Egypt and Iran have been broadly strained for decades, despite the fact that the two countries maintained some diplomatic contacts.
The mentioned phone call follows the moves of other countries in the region to ease tensions in recent months.
Egypt’s Sunni Muslim ally Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran restored diplomatic ties in 2023, while Cairo closed a rift with Qatar and restored relations with Turkey.
