About 70 of those on board are minors and 88 are women, the UN refugee agency said, adding that the vessel is near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The United Nations is appealing for the rescue of 185 people, most of them women and children, who are on board a boat in danger in the Indian Ocean.
About 70 of those on board are minors and 88 are women, the UN refugee agency said, adding that the vessel is near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
“At least twelve people are in critical condition and one has died,” the statement said. “Many others may die (…) if they are not rescued in time.”
A UNHCR spokesman, Babar Balos, told AFP that his agency was contacting and pleading with authorities in all countries in the region to rescue the Rohingya migrants. “The situation is really desperate,” he added.
Thousands of Rohingya, members of a Muslim community persecuted in Myanmar, are trying to make time to reach Malaysia or Indonesia by sea. In 2022 at least 2,000 have ventured this dangerous journey while since the beginning of the year more than 570 people have been killed or are missing trying to flee Myanmar or Bangladeshi refugee camps.
