The city of Arbil’s airport was shut down after a drone rigged with explosives was shot down near a base where US forces are stationed, Iraq’s official news agency reported.

The drone crash caused “some injuries” and disrupted civilian flights, Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool said.

The drone targeted the base where US and international anti-jihadist coalition forces are stationed in northern Iraq, a US official said.

Attacks on US forces and the coalition fighting Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have multiplied since the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip began.

The base is located near Arbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan, Yahya Rasool noted. He did not specify how many are injured, nor in what condition they are.

The US official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the coalition was currently assessing whether there were any injuries or property damage.

Meanwhile, the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq”, a coalition of armed groups linked to Hashd al-Shaabi, the former paramilitaries who have now joined the Iraqi army, announced that it launched a drone strike against another base, that of Harir, north of Erbil. And on this base are based forces of the US and the international coalition.

Since October 17, the US has counted 103 attacks against its forces in Iraq and Syria. The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” claimed responsibility for most of them. In early December, the American embassy in Baghdad was targeted by rockets. There is currently no claim of responsibility for this attack.

The U.S. has about 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the fight against Islamic State that began in 2014.
