Times Square was filled with people from early on. At 12 the famous ball dropped, confetti filled the sky marking the start of the new year.
Police, deployed in midtown Manhattan, checked ‘suspicious’ cars, closed streets and ‘filtered’ the flow of the crowd with barriers. In a televised appearance before the start of celebrations in the city, Democratic President Joe Biden expressed optimism about the US economy, praised his country’s resilience and announced the “return” of the American people.
Brazil
Crowds filled the streets and the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to ring in the New Year with fireworks, music by a symphony orchestra and performances by local pop, funk and samba stars.

In Tel Aviv and southern Israel, seconds after the clock struck midnight, Israeli anti-missile defenses intercepted rockets fired by the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

But Vladimir Putin in his own speech promised that Russia would “never back down”, praising the soldiers fighting on the front lines.
