The next NATO summit will be held in Washington from July 9 to 11 and the Nordic country will be a full member by then, NATO Secretary General said
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is confident Sweden will join the military alliance by July at the latest, he told German news agency DPA this week.
The next NATO summit will be held in Washington from July 9 to 11 and the Nordic country will be a full member by then, he said.
Sweden and Finland abandoned decades of neutrality and both applied to become NATO allies in the wake of the full-scale invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. While Helsinki’s accession was quickly approved, Stockholm’s accession has been suspended due to disagreements from both Turkey and Hungary.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants the Swedish government to crack down on members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on its soil and is using Turkey’s veto power to push for the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets from the US.
The foreign affairs committee of the Turkish parliament has given its approval for Sweden’s joining the alliance, and now Parliament will have to give the green light.
Stockholm kept its commitments to Ankara and made concessions, Stoltenberg said.
