Five Coast Guardsmen aboard Japan Airlines plane collided with dead – JAL Flight 516 had departed from Hokkaido Airport, carrying 367 passengers and 12 crew members

Japan Airlines is also investigating the details and cause of the fire on the plane, an airline spokesperson told CNN. According to the Japan Coast Guard, the Coast Guard aircraft that collided with the JAL plane was a Bombardier MA722 (27.43 meters wide, 25.68 meters long),

JAL flight 516 departed from New Chitose Airport (Hokkaido), carrying 367 passengers, including eight infants, and a crew of 12. All 379 people on board were rescued, JAL said.
More than 100 fire engines have been dispatched to the scene of the fire and most flights have been cancelled, NHK reports.
The Coast Guard aircraft was scheduled to fly to Niigata Prefecture to help with relief efforts after the major earthquake.
Video released shows flames rising near the plane’s engines and firefighters battling the blaze. Although approx 70 fire engines were dispatched after the incident, which happened at 5:47 p.m., the plane was almost completely engulfed in flames by 6:30 p.m., according to video.

“I felt a bounce, as if the aircraft collided with something when landing”one of the passengers told the Japan Times. “I saw a spark out of it window and the cabin filled with gas and smoke.”
Swede Anton Deibe, 17, who was on the Japan Airlines plane, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that “the entire cabin was filled with smoke within minutes.” “We fell to the floor. Then the emergency doors opened and we ran into them.
“The cabin smelled like hell. It was hell. We had no idea where we were going so we ran out to the airport. It was chaos”, the 17-year-old added to the Swedish newspaper according to the agency. Debe was traveling with his parents and sister.
Kaoru Ishii, who was waiting outside the arrivals gate for her 29-year-old daughter and her boyfriend to return on the flight, said she thought the flight was delayed until her daughter called to explain.
“He said the plane was on fire and that it came out via a slide,” Ishii said. “I was really relieved that he was okay,” he told Japan Today.

“I’ve never heard of such a big conflict at an airport in Japan,” said Yoshitomo Aoki, an air crash investigation expert.
“Air traffic control systems around the world are designed to prevent accidentssince air traffic controllers at airports issue correct instructions and the pilots follow them” he added.

Haneda is currently closed, but Japanese authorities are doing everything they can to reopen the airport on Wednesday or even earlier.
