An Israeli drone struck its offices today Tuesday Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas in Beirut, killing six people according to a more recent account by Hezbollah-linked al-Mayadeen.
Among the dead is one of the leading figures of Hamas, Mr Salah al-Arouri, deputy leader of the organization after Ismail Haniyaas reported by the Reuters news agency citing security officials.
Hamas confirmed the killing of its deputy leader from Israel. Israel has made no comment so far.
The explosion rocked Beirut on Tuesday as tensions escalated on the border with Israel. Videos showed extensive damage to cars and homes.
Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that the explosion was heard in the Masrifiya district, south of Beirut, and that cars were on fire.
The Washington Post cited a Hezbollah spokesman as saying that the headquarters of a Palestinian official was targeted in the Dahiyeh suburb where Masrifiyah is located. The area is also home to Hezbollah’s headquarters.
The blast comes as tensions escalate on the border between Israel and Israel and the Shiite organization Hezbollah of Lebanon. Israel carried out raids in Syria and Lebanon overnight on Tuesday, with the Israeli military saying they targeted Hezbollah infrastructure.
