Macron’s funeral
“Jacques Delors never tired of exploring to reconcileas a trailblazer, to open alternative options, to build bridges,” said the French head of state in the courtyard of the Envalid Palace (Palace of the Strongholds), during the official ceremony.
“The face of today’s Europe, Jacques Delors helped shape itline by line’the French president added, paying tribute to the father of the euro, who, head of the Commission from 1985 to 1995, established the single market, promoted the signing of the Schengen agreements, started the Erasmus program, reformed the common agricultural policy. ..
Jacques Delors made “the possibility of a social democracy of emancipation” emerge, the French head of state underlined. “The possibility of a united Europe, that of Schengen, Erasmus, Maastricht, united by common values, from Compostela to the Balkans, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea”.
A few months before June’s European elections, in which Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Alarm is seen as the favorite in France, Emmanuel Macron has assured that his path “continues”.
“A difficult, steep road, one that moves away from ease and false pretenses(…), which combines the Nation and Europe, economic power and social justice, the real and the ideal”, he added.
The French president also paid tribute to Jacques Delors as former economy minister under François Mitterrand (1981-1984), ephemeral hope of the left in the 1995 presidential election, who “reconciled the government’s socialism with the market and the French with the economy”.
