New York City’s historic two-year absence of snow is likely to end this weekend with the arrival of a storm system, which is expected in the US’s most populous city and along the East Coast later today..

The city’s 8.5 million residents have seen more than 1 inch (2.54 cm) of snow in Central Park since February 13, 2022 — a record 692 days. The approaching low is expected to bring snowfall with up to 3 inches (7.6 cm) in some parts of the city, the National Weather Service announced.

The storm could bring more snowfall than last winter in New York City, when just 5.84 centimeters of snow fell, the least on record.

In a city where snowfalls of more than 12 inches are not uncommon–at least until recently–New Yorkers are not expected to experience snow problems this weekend.

Experts say the lack of snow in New York is yet another indication of how climate change is affecting weather around the world. The US Southwest, for example, experienced a prolonged heatwave last summer.
