The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed the conflict in Gaza, but also European security priorities, including the completion of Sweden’s accession to NATO, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a meeting held in Istanbul.

Regarding the war in Gaza, the State Department statement notes that Anthony Blinken “stressed the need to prevent an escalation of the conflict, secure the release of hostages, expand humanitarian assistance and reduce civilian casualties, as well as the need to work for a broader, lasting regional peace that will ensure Israel’s security and advance the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

Finally, Antony Blinken discussed with President Erdogan European security priorities, including defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, completing Sweden’s accession to NATO, and enhancing trade and investment between the United States and Turkey.
