The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group has claimed responsibility for a bus explosion that killed two people and injured 14 others in a Shiite suburb of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, a country with a majority Sunni population.
Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said the explosion occurred in the Dast-i-Barchi district, home mainly to members of the Hazara Shiite community, which has historically been harshly repressed.
“According to the first information, unfortunately two civilians who were on the bus were killed and 14 others were injured and admitted to a hospital,” said Mr. Zadran in a press release he released.
The local IS arm claimed responsibility for the attack via Telegram.
In November, seven people were killed in an identical incident when a bomb exploded inside a bus in Dast-i-Barchi. And in that case, IS assumed the responsibility, which considers the Shiites “apostates” (heretics).
The number of bombings, particularly suicide bombings, has fallen sharply in Afghanistan since the fundamentalist Sunni Taliban insurgents seized power on August 15, 2021, when the US-backed government collapsed.
However, various armed organizations, especially IS, continue to operate in the Asian country, which remain a serious threat to security, despite the assurances of the regime that it controls the situation
