German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock, who is on a visit to Jerusalem, called on Israel on Sunday to show more restraint in the war in the Gaza Strip, believing that a “less intensive management of operations” is necessary.

“The suffering of many innocent people cannot continue like this. We need a less intensive conduct of operations,” the minister told reporters after meetings with her Israeli counterpart Israel Katz and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

“It is increasingly clear that the Israeli military must do more to protect civilians in Gaza. It must find ways to fight Hamas without many Palestinians suffering,” he added.

Germany is unconditionally supporting Israel after it launched a war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Palestinian Islamist movement’s deadly attack on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023.

“I reiterated my assurance: your country can count on our solidarity in the fight against the blind terrorism that wants to wipe Israel off the map. If Hamas had not fanatically continued this senseless battle, the war would have ended here and now time,” said Burbock.

However, the German minister said she “clearly told” her interlocutors that they must take into account all aspects: “the way the Israeli government is conducting this war, the way the Israeli government is thinking about what will happen next , the way the Israeli government deals with the plight of the Palestinians, all of these affect the security of Israel itself.”

The foreign minister also warned against calls by two far-right Israeli ministers for the return of Jewish settlers to Gaza and the “immigration” of Palestinians.

It is “irrevocable that Gaza belongs to the Palestinians,” Burbok said. “They should not be expelled from Gaza.”

During this fourth visit to the Middle East since the start of the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas, the German official is also expected to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and her Palestinian counterpart Riyadh al-Maliki. Burbok will then travel to Egypt where she will meet her counterpart Sameh Shoukry, and then to Lebanon.
