The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling for an immediate end to the Houthi attacks
The US and the UK have hinted that they might to take military action against Yemen’s Houthi rebels after they repelled the biggest attack to date in the Red Sea.
Fighter jets launched from aircraft carriers and warships shot down 21 drones and missiles fired by the Iran-backed Shiite group on Tuesday night.
The UN Security Council approved a resolution on Wednesday calling for an immediate end to Houthi attacks.
The text approved the right of UN member states to defend their ships. The Houthis reacted by defying the resolution.
Their spokesman, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, characterized the resolution “political game”. The Houthis say they are targeting ships linked to Israel in protest of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
The UN resolution requires “from the Houthis to stop immediately all such attacks, which impede global trade and undermine the rights and freedoms of navigation as well as regional peace and security.” Eleven nations voted for it, but Russia, China, Mozambique and Algeria abstained.
Earlier, the US and several allies warned of “consequences” from the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Asked about possible strikes in Yemen, UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Watch this space.”
The International Chamber of Shipping has announced that 20% of the world’s container ships avoid the Red Sea and they use the much longer route around the southern tip of Africa.
The Houthis said they targeted a US ship on Tuesday that was providing support to Israel. It was the 26th attack on merchant shipping in the Red Sea since November 19.
