A key point will be the operation of the nuclear power plant in Akougiou
A national program for the acquisition of nuclear submarines by Turkey in the medium term is mentioned in a report published on the Turkish website of the specialized defense information website Savunma SanayiST.
In fact, the report refers to a predecessor of the Turkish Navy magazine, “Deniz Kuvvetleri Dergisi”, which stated that Turkey in a short period of time and when the nuclear power plant in Akuyu is put into operation, will take its place on the chessboard between countries using nuclear energy.
In particular, the Savunma SanayiST article states that “the fact that our country will start using nuclear technology will be a turning point for the planned national nuclear submarine program that is planned to be implemented in the medium term” emphasizing at the same time that “the transition to nuclear submarines it will definitely mean critical developments for the Turkish Navy”.
The article is signed by Vice Captain Denis Aytan, and highlights important information about nuclear-powered submarines.
“With the exception of the operation and maintenance of the nuclear reactor, which is a highly technical issue, it is extremely important to develop now projects that go along with the idea of utilizing our submarines and begin preparations for the training of submarine personnel . In this way, there will be forward-looking plans that will be formed as early as the project planning phase and provide guidance to solve problems before they arise.”
The article even mentions the BARRACUDA class nuclear submarines (SSN), which are used as an example for the process that will lead to the national nuclear submarine program.
It is noted that the same issue is reproduced by the Islamist pro-government newspaper Yeni Akit under the title “Turkey’s move that will make Greece and the USA lose their sleep”.
