The worst fears were confirmed Iceland as the lava from yesterday explosion of volcano on the Reykian Peninsula – the largest in 50 years – arrived in the city Grindavik, about 40 kilometers southwest of the capital Reykjavik.

The first houses have been engulfed in flames and the videos on social media are shocking.

The almost 4,000 inhabitants of the town of Grindavik were again invited to evacuate their homes yesterday just weeks after returning to them following the volcano’s last eruption on December 18.

Grindavik was not in danger then, as the lava flowed in the opposite direction from the city.

But this time the city seems to have surrendered to destruction.

Despite the apocalyptic images, the president of Iceland assured that the eruption of the volcano does not threaten human lives.

Yesterday morning, after the explosion, Gudni Johannesson wrote to X that “no life is in danger”, but “infrastructure may be threatened”.
