“Beef,” “The Bear” and the final season of “Succession” dominated the glitzy 2023 Emmy Awards yesterday.

Jesse Armstrong’s hit HBO drama won six awards including the award for best drama series.

Actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen were also honored.

Armstrong thanked HBO for believing in him and the series. “We created a series about the family, but it’s also about the media and the partisan coverage of the right.” He then joked that in the real world this is a problem that has now been “fixed”.

The first season of “The Bear” also won six awards, including for comedy series and lead actor Jeremy Allen White. Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won supporting actor awards.

Netflix’s ‘Breakout Beef’ won five awards, including for actors Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.

In particular, the actress became the first woman of Asian origin to win an Emmy for a leading role.

Series creator Lee Sung Jin paid tribute to his cast for being able to “love so unconditionally,” while also contributing personal stories of suicidal ideation that served as the show’s main theme.

Jennifer Coolidge was also named best supporting actress in a drama for her role in the second season of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” her second acting Emmy, having also won the first season.

It is noted that tonight’s ceremony was delayed from last September due to the actors who were on strike in Hollywood. That means the next Emmys will be in September 2024.

As at the Golden Globes, speeches dealing with social or political issues were restricted, but there were a few exceptions.

It is noted that a special award was given to the LGBTQ+ advocacy NGO Glaad for advice on shows and TV films with queer and trans characters.

Glaad CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said: “The world urgently needs culture-changing stories about trans people” at a time when people are sharing “cruel and harmful lies” about the community.

Finally, the… losers of this year’s EMMY Awards were as follows:

  • Ted Lasso,
  • The Crown,
  • The Last of Us
  • Wednesday.
  • Better Call Saul
