Pakistan recalled its ambassador to Tehran on Wednesday, a day after Iran launched airstrikes in Pakistanwhich said it targeted bases of a militant Sunni separatist group.

Islamabad angrily denounced the attack as a “flagrant violation” of his airspace and said that killed two children.

In particular, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, announced that Islamabad recalls the country’s ambassador to Iran over the attacks.

“The unprovoked and flagrant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty last night by Iran is a violation of international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter”she said in a televised speech.

Baloch added that Pakistan also asked the Iranian ambassador, who was visiting Tehran when the attack took place, not to return.

Tuesday’s strike in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province jeopardized diplomatic relations between the two neighbors, but both sides showed restraint in further tension. Iran and Pakistan have nuclear arsenals.

The attack also threatened to further fuel violence in the Middle East, in an area where Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip is already raging. Iran launched raids late Monday in Iraq and Syria in response to a suicide bombing claimed by Islamic State that killed more than 90 people earlier this month.
