The Ukrainian territory has been transformed into a huge cemetery for tens of thousands of Russian soldiers. Until today, January 19, the names of 42,284 Russian servicemen killed in the war have become known. The losses have been calculated by the Mediazona website and the BBC Russian Service in collaboration with a group of volunteers. More than 1,600 people have been added to the list of dead since the previous record released on December 29.

The journalists of the specific media participating in the investigation report that they are among the dead 7,810 ex-prisoners recruited for the war from prison colonies (penitentiaries). 5,089 of the dead were soldiers.

On January 19, the death was confirmed more than 3,000 officers of the Russian army and other security forces. 349 of them had the rank of colonel or higher.

Most of the dead came from Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Rostov regions, as well as Buryatia.

The registration of the dead is done from open sources – reports from local administrations, mass media and relatives of the dead, as well as from data from cemeteries. The Russian service of the BBC notes that the number of dead identified in this way it does not reflect the actual level of losses.

Moscow and Kiev do not disclose losses in the war in Ukraine, speaking only of the enemy’s losses. Parties to military conflicts tend to exaggerate their successes and downplay their failures. The investigation-documentation by the Russian service of the BBC and the website Mediazone is one of the most important independent estimates of the death toll.
