Firefights are daily on the Israel-Lebanon border between the Israeli army and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas
The number of people who have been killed by Israel in southern Lebanon rose today to 200including 146 Hezbollah fighters, more than three months after the escalation began on the border between the two countries, according to an Agence France-Presse count.
After the Palestinian Hamas attack on Israeli territory on October 7, exchanges of fire are daily on the Israeli-Lebanese border between the Israeli army and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas.
The pro-Iranian group announced the death of two fighters “on the way to Jerusalem” today, an expression it uses to describe its fighters killed by Israeli fire, bringing the death toll to 200, according to an AFP count.
The count was based on announcements by Hezbollah and other allied organizations, among other Palestinian factions, as well as official sources.
Among the dead are 25 civilians, including 3 journalists, as well as two rescuers, a Lebanese army soldier and 20 fighters, half of whom belong to Hamas and the other half to Islamic Jihad.
That tally does not include Hamas’s number two Saleh al-Arouri, who was killed along with six other officials and operatives of the organization in an airstrike attributed to Israel in the southern suburbs of Hezbollah’s stronghold of Beirut.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, Hezbollah has also announced the death of 16 fighters in Syria, who were killed by Israel.
In Israel, the authorities announced the death of 9 soldiers and six civilians.
Hezbollah says it is targeting Israeli army positions on the border to support Palestinians in Gaza. Israel responds by bombing the organization’s “infrastructure” and fighters on the border.
In its latest report in a series, the International Organization for Migration states that the escalation at the Israel-Lebanon border has resulted in to displace more than 83,000 people in Lebanon, especially from the border area.
Residents and AFP photojournalists speak of great destruction caused to homes, forests and agricultural crops, following the Israeli bombardments, mainly in the border villages.
