As The Moscow Times points out, this is the biggest increase in the last 13 years.
The prices of the services and products they offer funeral homes have grown rapidly in Russia over the past two years.
Against the background of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022-2023, the average price for the construction of a coffin has increased by 22.2%, The Moscow Times newspaper wrote yesterday, citing data from the Russian statistics agency Rosstat. The price rose by 15.82% in the first year of the war and an additional 5.55% in the second.
As The Moscow Times points out, this is the biggest increase in the last 13 years.
Taking into account the year 2021, in which the Russian Federation recorded mortality rates unprecedented in modern history, the cost of coffins increased by 36.6%. A similar jump in coffin prices over a three-year period – about 40% – was last seen in Russia during the 2008-2010 crisis.
In addition, the cost of grave digging services has increased significantly. In 2023, costs increased by 11.25%, the highest in the entire period of available statistics on this topic since 2016, the publication points out. Over the past two years, the cost of these services has increased by 20.6 percent.
Organizing a funeral in Russia today costs from 50,000 rubles, The Moscow Times reports, citing Yelena Andreeva, head of the Association of Funeral Organizations and Crematoriums. According to her, the increase in prices for funeral services is caused by “the increase in the price of basic market products”, such as wood and metal.
The Russian Ministry of Defense does not publish official data on the losses of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine.
The last time Russian authorities reported a total death toll of 5,937 was in September 2022. In mid-December 2023, US intelligence released its own figures, which put the Russian Federation’s war casualties at 315,000 dead and wounded soldiers. The Russian website Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC Russian Service and a group of volunteers, has identified the names of more than 42,000 Russian servicemen killed in Ukraine by Friday 19 January.
