The Palestinian Authority has welcomed the interim measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said today, as the reading of the Court’s verdict in South Africa’s appeal against Israel was underway .

“The judges of the International Court of Justice in The Hague evaluated the facts and the legislation, they ruled in favor of humanity and international law,” he told a television network.

He added that Palestine calls on all states to ensure that the measures ordered by the Court are implemented “including Israel, the occupying power.”

In session today, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ordered Israel to allow humanitarian aid access to Gaza and “prevent and punish” incitement to genocide.

Israel should be referred to Court within one month for the measures taken for to comply with the order.

The court also ruled that Palestinians meet the criteria to be a protected group under the Genocide Convention. The Court recognizes the right of the Palestinians of Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide.

“The Palestinians appear to constitute a distinct national, racial or religious group, and therefore a protected group, within the meaning of Article 2 of the Genocide Convention,” said Judge Joan Donoghue.
