Ukraine’s SBU security service announced on Saturday that it had uncovered a corruption scheme involving the purchase of weapons from the country’s military totaling about $40 millionaccording to Reuters.

The announcement of the massive procurement fraud, confirmed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraineis expected to play out in the war-torn country nearly two years after Russia invaded.

The struggle to eradicate endemic corruption remains a major issue as Ukraine strives to secure its membership in the European Union.

The SBU investigation involves officials of the Ministry of Defense and managers of the arms supplier Lviv Arsenal, who allegedly embezzled almost 1.5 billion for the purchase of shells.”

The embezzlement, according to the Ukrainian security service, involved the purchase of 100,000 mortar shells for the army.
