The marathon continues diplomatic contacts, in an effort to defuse tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The presidents of the USA and Ukraine had a telephone conversation yesterday Sunday. In a statement, Joe Biden reiterated his call for a “rapid and decisive” US response to Volodymyr Zelensky, in coordination with its allies, in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine.

According to Washington, the two leaders also agreed on the importance of continuing diplomacy and deterrence in response to Russian military assistance to Ukraine’s borders.

In a statement, the Ukrainian presidency said that Volodymyr Zelensky had invited Joe Biden to visit Ukraine, stressing that such a move would be indicative of US support and would contribute to de-escalation. Joe Biden told the Ukrainian President that the US will respond “immediately and decisively” if Russia takes further steps for invasion, according to the White House.

German Chancellor Olaf Soltz is leaving for Kiev today to meet with the Ukrainian President. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Mr. Soltz will travel to Moscow to meet with the President of Russia.

“The chancellor will make it clear “Any attack on Ukraine will have serious consequences for Moscow,” said a source close to the German government.

So far, Moscow has deployed more than 100,000 troops and heavy weapons on the Ukrainian border, while Kiev, for its part, has received from its Western allies about 1,500 tons of ammunition in 17 flights.

According to a statement from the country’s Ministry of Defense, Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems and ammunition were received from Lithuania yesterday, while two aircraft were carrying about 180 tons of ammunition from the USA.
