IS chief Ismail Haniyeh to visit Cairo for talks on ceasefire plan
The Hamas organization has announced that it has accepted and is “examining” a proposal for a cease-fire agreement with Israel in the Gaza Strip. following weekend talks in Paris between representatives of the US, Israel, Qatar and Egypt.
From Qatar, the leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh “He confirmed that the movement accepted a proposal circulated during the talks and that Hamas is considering it” and is preparing its response, according to the statement.
Ismail Haniyeh will visit Cairo for talks on the ceasefire plan, Hamas said in a statement.
Haniyeh reiterated that the organization’s goal remains to end Israel’s military offensive in Gaza and to ensure the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory.
Israel would find it difficult to accept such terms, but Qatar, the US and Egypt hope to see if the two sides can be persuaded to agree to a truce lasting at least a month, during which thousands of Palestinian prisoners would be freed in exchange for the release of a large group of hostages.
The framework of the proposal was tabled between Egypt, Qatar, the US and Israel on Sunday at talks in Paris.
