Russia carried out a new night attack against Ukraine with 20 ungrounded aircraft and three ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian armed forces announced today, emphasizing that the anti-aircraft defense shot down around 12 of these weapons.

Ukraine, which has been under Russian aerial bombardment for nearly two years, has called on its Western allies to strengthen its defense systems.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said today, ahead of a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels, that Ukraine needs more ammunition.

“We need to show that we continue our clear commitment to Ukraine,” Borrell said, adding that it was important to clarify the situation and “know where we are now, where we will be in March and by the end of the year.”

The Ukrainian Air Force clarified that Russian forces launched 20 Iranian-made attack drones as well as three ballistic missiles.

Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems, mainly in the regions south and east of the front, shot down the drones, according to the same source, which did not mention the missiles.

Authorities have so far released little information on the damage caused by this new attack.

Police in the eastern district of Kharkiv, on the border with Russia, however, reported that a supermarket and residences were damaged by the attack.

On the Russian side, the pro-Russian mayor of Horlivka said today that two civilians were killed and one wounded by a drone strike in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk controlled by Russian forces.

“Due to a hit by an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Ukrainian armed forces against a civilian vehicle on the road connecting Horlivka with Donetsk, near the village of Panteleimonovka, two civilians were killed, one person was injured,” the mayor of Horlivka, Ivan Prikhodko, announced through of his channel on the Telegram platform.

In addition, a Ukrainian drone was “destroyed by air defense forces over the territory of the Pskov region”, in northwestern Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on its official website.

In recent months, Ukraine has been multiplying its attacks on Russia, but they are generally focused on border regions, such as Belgorod.

However, the country has already taken responsibility for acts of sabotage in much more distant areas, even the Russian Far East.
