THE India released a dove, which he remained imprisoned for eight months on suspicion of espionageas the animal was eventually acquittedwas announced today by Peta, the organization for the protection of animals.

The bird was caught in May carrying an “unreadable message” and was taken into custody at a veterinary clinic in Mumbai (western India), before being released on January 30 by the police, the same source said.

According to the Times of India newspaper, the message was written in Chinese, which worried investigators.

“The police had started a procedure for espionage against the bird, but she closed the file after completing her investigation,” the newspaper reports. AFP could not get official confirmation.

Arrests of carrier pigeons for espionage are not uncommon in India. In 2016, one of them was jailed after it was caught near the Pakistan border while carrying a message threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
