London, Thanasis Gavos

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson said that there were “clear indications that serious preparations are being made” for an invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine.

Referring to the information cited by the US, he said that “the indications are that at least something is planned that could be done even within the next 48 hours”.

He described the situation as “extremely dangerous” and added: “We are on the edge of a cliff“But there is still time for President Putin to back down.”

He said how an invasion It will be a “catastrophic mistake, catastrophic for Russia” and that President Putin must realize that there would be a great political and economic price.

The British Prime Minister also called for a united front of the West against Russia in terms of economic sanctions, stressing that Western countries must get rid of “the subcutaneous serum of Russian hydrocarbons” and turn to alternative energy sources.

He even made special reference to the need to reject the Nord Stream pipeline from Europe.

However, he refrained from commenting directly on the statements of the Minister of Defense of his government, Ben Wallace, about the “smell of Munich” in the efforts to confront Russia by some Western countries. Many criticized the statement as equating diplomatic maneuvers with trying to appease Hitler and therefore as an insult to Britain’s current allies.

At the same time, a Downing Street spokesman said there was no evidence that Russia was escalating tensions. He added that there was a “serious possibility” of an invasion of Ukraine this week.

However, the spokesman noted that “all diplomatic channels will continue to be explored.”

Mr Johnson also announced contacts with other leaders, including US President Joe Biden.

He also said that there could be no exchange of Ukraine’s ambitions for NATO membership with the de-escalation of Russian aggression, in a comment that apparently referred to a statement by the Ukrainian ambassador in London, which, however, has now been reconstructed.
