A 52-year-old man has died after drinking added champagne at a restaurant in southern Germany, according to prosecutors.
Five men and three women, aged between 33 and 52, felt unwell after drinking from the same bottle at a restaurant in the Bavarian town of Weiden on Saturday night. They were taken to a hospital where a little later the 52-year-old passed away.
According to prosecutor Gert Schaefer, the toxicological examination revealed that the champagne contained a high amount of ecstasy. The prosecutor’s office is conducting a preliminary investigation into negligent homicide, causing bodily harm and violating the drug law.
The first goal of the research is to determine how, and where the bottle came from and who knew it contained ecstasy.
A local radio station reported that after drinking champagne, some customers felt horrible pain, until they fell screaming on the restaurant floor.
The condition of the other seven people being treated is not a cause for concern.
The Bild newspaper writes that the champagne in question came from a three-liter bottle, which was opened for the victims’ table. Some customers immediately said it had a “chemical” and “weird” taste.
The mayor of Weiden, Jens Meger, said he was shocked by the tragedy and spoke of a “very sad day” for his city.
