Transport in China was disrupted due to the snow. Snowstorms and freezing rain have disrupted all public transport in large parts of China as millions of people travel for the Lunar New Year holiday (Saturday, February 10).

Hundreds of flights and train routes have been canceled while motorists have been stuck on icy highways for days.

The Chinese annual holiday causes the “greater annual human migration”, as millions of people in China travel to their respective homelands, the BBC reports.

Travel has also increased after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions after a year.

Authorities expect 480 million trips to be made for the Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. It is indicative that the volume is 40% higher compared to the previous year.

China’s meteorological agency has warned of the worst winter weather conditions since 2008. The central region of the country – including provinces such as Hebei, Hubei and Anhui – have suffered the worst effects of the severe weather.

On social media, the Chinese report that the bitter cold has spoiled their plans to reunite with family. They posted pictures of themselves trapped in trains and railway stations, while power lines were also cut.
