The origin of the attack is not yet known, but Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since 2011 when civil war broke out in the neighboring country.
The Syrian army’s air defenses responded today to an attack near Damascus, state media reported.
Syrian air defense systems encountered “hostile objects near Damascus,” the official Sana news agency said, without elaborating.
The origin of the attack is not yet known, but Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since 2011 when civil war broke out in the neighboring country.
These attacks have multiplied since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip in October, effectively targeting forces backed by Iran, an ally of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Israel rarely comments on the strikes but has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria.
Earlier this month, the US military launched airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against more than 85 targets linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the militias they support, in retaliation for an attack in Jordan in January that resulted in three American soldiers are killed.
Since December, Israeli strikes have killed at least six Revolutionary Guards, including a high-ranking intelligence general.
The Guards have suffered one of their biggest blows in Syria since arriving a decade ago to help Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian war.
Informed sources told Reuters that the Guard had withdrawn some of its senior officers as a result. Iran’s ambassador to Syria said yesterday, Thursday, that Iran remains “present” in Syria. The Iranian foreign minister is expected in Lebanon today and then on to Damascus early next week for meetings with top officials.
