Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during an interview broadcast today that “enough” of the 132 remaining hostages being held in Gaza are alive to justify Israel’s ongoing war in the region.

Asked how many of the hostages were alive, Netanyahu said: “enough to justify the kind of efforts we are making.”

“We’re going to try to do our best to bring back everyone who’s alive and, frankly, the bodies, too, of those who have died,” he said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

Netanyahu further said that one Palestinian civilian has been killed for every Hamas fighter killed in Gaza.

Health authorities in Gaza estimate that more than 28,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the area since the war began in October.

Palestinian health authorities say about 70% of those killed are women and children under 18. The World Health Organization has described the Palestinian health ministry’s system for recording casualties as “very good” and UN agencies often cite its death tolls.
