Donald Trump, who will likely face Joe Biden in November’s election, often accuses US NATO allies of not living up to their military spending commitments.
The American former president Donald Trump rejected yesterday Monday the many criticisms he received for his threats regarding NATOassuring that during his tenure made the Alliance “strong”.
Trump, the favorite to win the Republican nomination for the November election, said on Saturday that he would “encourage” Russia to attack NATO member countries that do not spend enough money on their military spending.
“I made NATO strong, and even far-left Democrats and pseudo-Republicans admit that,” the former president told Truth Social.
“When I told the 20 countries that weren’t paying their fair share that they should pay or they wouldn’t benefit from American protection, the money flowed,” he added.
“But now that I’m not there to say ‘you’ve got to pay,’ they’ve started again,” Trump continued.
Donald Trump, who will likely face Joe Biden in the November election, often blames US NATO allies that they are not keeping their commitments regarding military spending.
The Republican also commented yesterday that the money that the US has offered to Ukraine is much more than what NATO has offered. And this at a time when difficult negotiations are taking place in Congress to release a new aid package to Kiev amounting to 60 billion dollars.
“We’re helping Ukraine with more than $100 billion more than NATO,” Trump said. “NATO must equalize now,” he emphasized. “Otherwise, it will be America first,” he concluded, referring to the central tenet of foreign policy during his presidency.
