A German was arrested on his arrival in St. Petersburg for having in his possession gummy candies containing cannabisthe Russian customs service said in a statement.

The 38-year-old arrived in St. Petersburg from Istanbul and during the check of his luggage he was found to have a package of “Fink Green Goldbears”, on the package of which there was an image of a marijuana leaf.

Russian customs officers found six jelly candies, which they said had a strong smell. Tests confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabinoid banned in Russia.

“The passenger explained that at the end of last year he bought 10 candies containing marijuana from a specialty store in his home country,” the customs service announced. “He himself traveled the world several times with such ‘candies’ and used them during long flights to have a ‘peaceful sleep’.”

The customs service released a photo showing a German passport, six jelly candies and a packet of ‘Fink Green Goldpears’.

A criminal case was opened against the man for illegal drug trafficking and he was taken into custody. The maximum penalty for such an offense is seven years in prison.
