The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is today making his first visit to Egypt since 2012 to meet with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Erdogan has stated that his talks will focus on Israel’s offensive in Gaza. The two leaders, whose relations have been strained since Egypt’s 2013 military coup against the Muslim Brotherhood, are due to hold a joint news conference later.

The two presidents, accompanied by their wives, exchanged handshakes during the Turkish leader’s descent from the plane, according to images broadcast live by Egyptian television stations.

The visit is the culmination of diplomatic efforts in recent years for the thawing of Turkish-Egyptian relations. Last year the two countries mutually appointed ambassadors, and this month Turkey announced it would supply Egypt with armed drones.

Relations between Ankara and Cairo had collapsed in 2013after the then defense minister and head of the armed forces Sisi had led the overthrow of Turkey’s ally then president Mohamed Morsi, who was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
