The German press on the first foreign leader on Russia’s wanted list and Emmanuel Macron’s big words
“Kaya Kalas made it,” it reads Spiegel Online on Russia’s “proclamation” of Estonia’s prime minister. “As a reward for the continuous struggle against the Kremlin’s propaganda in the Ukrainian war,” the magazine characterizes the inclusion of the Estonian prime minister in Russia’s wanted list. And this because “Kalas was never deceived by Vladimir Putin. As early as January 2022, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, its country decided to deliver weapons to Kiev,” says Der Spiegel in its online edition.
“In March 2022, two weeks after the Russian attack, some in Europe were still debating whether economic ties to Russia could be maintained,” the magazine notes. “Kallas, on the other hand, warned that the war would not end quickly and that Europe needed to stand united while repeatedly attacking Vladimir Putin and demanding early convictions for war crimes.”
“It seems almost logical that the Kremlin perceives Kalas as an enemy. As a personified alternative to Vladimir Putin’s Russia, he represents a country that has distanced itself from the former occupying power,” Spiegel Online comments on Russia’s accusations of “falsification of history.”
The newspaper Volksstimme of Magdeburg characterizes Kala’s inclusion in a wanted list as a sharp warning to the head of the Estonian government. The Baltic country is, according to the newspaper, “the softest border of the North Atlantic Alliance. Almost a quarter of the population is Russian. If Moscow wants to integrate the Baltics, Estonia could be its first move,” the paper warns.
The “big mouth” Macron
“Macron wants to portray himself as a great savior,” she comments Süddeutsche Zeitung the French President’s canceled trip to Ukraine “According to unofficial speculation, however, the cancellation of the trip is due to the fact that the aid promised so far is not enough for Kiev.”
So according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, “France supported Ukraine with weapons worth half a billion euros from January 2022 to October 2023, while Germany provided military aid amounting to about 17 billion euros, i.e. 34 times more,” reports SZ. “In the overall ranking for military, humanitarian and economic aid, France is in 12th place, behind Germany and the United Kingdom, behind even the Netherlands and Switzerland.”
The reluctance of the French President, according to the Munich newspaper, is also explained by “the poor condition of the French army. For example, the Leclerc tanks, which Ukraine desperately wants, cannot be granted because the French army does not have enough.”
