Republicans warn of ‘national security threat’ over Russia wanting nuclear weapons in space
Alert in the US. The puzzling call by the Republican head of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, to US President Joe Biden to declassify information about a “serious threat to national security” concerns Moscow’s intention to put nuclear weapons in space, sources told ABC.
Two sources familiar with the Capitol Hill deliberations told the US network “that the classified information has to do with the Russians wanting to put a nuclear weapon in space” characteristically mentioned.
Moscow’s goal, it was clarified, was not to use a nuclear weapon on earth; but against satellites.
“It’s very concerning and very sensitive,” said a source, who called it a “big deal.”
Although they are not directly involved in the issue, many members of Congress are describe the issue as serious – but they assure that it is not something that should cause public concern.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan was pressed several times by reporters at a White House briefing about the Republican request to declassify classified information, but declined to say whether it would be discussed at Thursday’s meeting with the eight congressional national security chiefs.
He also declined to elaborate on that, other than to say that, in general, “Americans understand that there are a number of threats and challenges in the world that we deal with every day,” such as terrorism.
“I am confident that President Biden, with the decisions he makes, will ensure the safety of the American people,” Sullivan said.
We cannot answer with a resounding yes on whether there is a threat to national security, the US official added.
