THE Lyudmila Navalnayathe mother of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalnyis on her way to the prison where her son died, accompanied by his lawyer, writes the police today Novaya Gazeta.

Navalny’s spokeswoman confirmed his death and asked the Russian authorities to hand over his body to his family immediately.

Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s best-known political opponent, collapsed and died on Friday after a walk at the Arctic Wolf Penitentiary Colony, where he was serving a multi-year prison sentence, Russian authorities said.

According to the same newspaper, Navalny’s mother, upon hearing the news of her son’s death, said he was “alive, happy and healthy” when she last saw him on February 12.

Demonstrations and arrests

More than 100 people have been arrested by Russian authorities at rallies held since yesterday in memory of Alexei Navalny, according to reports in independent Russian media.

69 of the arrests took place in St. Petersburg.

Russian citizens have been warned not to protest.
