Explosions are a common occurrence in fireworks and sparkler industries. Fireworks are very popular in India and people use them in weddings as well as in religious celebrations such as Diwali. Many factories, however, do not comply with basic safety rules. Eleven workers were killed in New Delhi on Friday when a fire broke out at a paint factory following an explosion. Another eight people were killed and 80 injured this month in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh after an explosion at another fireworks factory sparked a massive fire.

One of the worst fires in the history of India occurred in 1985 in the state of Haryana, in a school. At that time, 442 people were killed, 258 of whom were children.
