South Korea today set a terrifying record for new coronavirus infections, which broke the 90,000-barrier for the first time and have almost doubled in a week due to the spread of the most contagious Omicron variant.

The Korea Office of Disease Control and Prevention (KCDA) announced that 90,443 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight Tuesday and 39 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

The death toll from a new coronavirus pandemic in South Korea has reached 7,202 dead out of a total of 1,552,851 infections, according to the KCDA. The mortality rate fell to 0.46%.

Infections increased dramatically compared to the previous one (57,177), as the Omicron variant wave continues to grow.

Prime Minister Kim Bo-kyum, however, said the government was considering easing social distance measures. She is expected to announce her decisions the day after tomorrow, Friday.

More than 86% of South Koreans have been fully vaccinated to date, and 58% have received a booster dose, according to the KCDA.
