Serbia’s attitude towards Russia must now be assessed in the context of Russia’s progress in Ukraine and the outcome of the US presidential election, Vucic stressed.
Serbia’s relations with Russia may suffer after his death Alexei Navalnythe Serbian president said today Aleksandar Vucic on the Serbian television network Prva.
Vucic said he was “shocked” by the news of the 47-year-old Russian dissident’s death.
It is the first time that the Serbian president, who maintains a friendly attitude towards Moscow, has publicly addressed the issue of Navalny’s death. Vucic was criticized by the media for not applauding Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnayafollowing her speech at the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
Serbia’s attitude towards Russia must now be assessed in the context of Russia’s progress in Ukraine and the outcome of the US presidential election, Vucic stressed. He noted, however, that the adoption of sanctions against Russia is still out of the question.
When asked about his reaction to Navalnaya’s speech, the Serbian president claimed he did not know who the speaker was. Before her speech, Navalnaya sat next to Vucic.
Videos published in Serbian media show that although Vucic rose from his chair after Navalnaya’s speech, unlike everyone else in the audience, he did not applaud.
In his foreign policy, Vucic oscillates between Russia and the West. Despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Serbian president maintains good relations with the Kremlin, but also wants to lead his country to join the European Union.
