FAA strengthens Boeing 787 Dreamliner oversight for certification

by

The US Civil Aviation Authority (FAA) announced yesterday, Tuesday, that it will carry out final inspections on the new aircraft Boeing 787 Dreamliner and will not allow the manufacturer to validate the navigability of its aircraft on its own.

The FAA said it had informed Boeing of the decision, seeking to ensure that “Boeing’s quality control and production processes lead to the stable production of the 787 aircraft in accordance with FAA design and construction rules”.

Boeing announced that “it will continue to work transparently through the FAA’s detailed and rigorous procedures; we will continue to work with the FAA to ensure that we meet their expectations and all the practical requirements that have been set.”

Boeing suspended deliveries of 787 aircraft in late Mayfollowing concerns from the FAA about the inspection method proposed by the manufacturer.

Aircraft deliveries remain on hold as supervisors evaluate repairs and carry out inspections. Deliveries are expected to remain frozen for a few months.

The chairman of the Transport and Infrastructure Committee of the House of Representatives, Peter DeFazio, commented positively on the FAA’s moves “to implement the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the passenger public.” He underlined that the committee is investigating the production, but also the way of construction of the 787.

The 787 program remains in production at a slow pace, with a gradual return to production of five aircraft per month expected, Boeing said.

Boeing has announced that it will pay $ 3.5 billion in compensation for delays in aircraft deliveries, as well as $ 1 billion in compromises reached with its customers, as well as $ 1 billion in emergency production costs due to aircraft manufacturing problems. and related repairs and inspections for the aircraft in question, which has a high rate of use of synthetic materials in its production.

Boeing shares rose 3.7% yesterday.
