A new drop in the percentages of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the return of the Liberals (FDP) to the limit of 5% is reflected in a new poll.

According to the “Tendency Barometer” of the Forsa Institute on behalf of the ntv/RTL television stations, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) leads with 30%, a loss of one unit from the previous poll, while the ÁfD remains in second place with 17% (-1) which records its worst performance since last June. In December 2023 it was at 23%. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) follows with 15% without change in its percentages, as do the Greens, with 14%. The FDP gains one point and reaches the 5% mark, from which Zara Wagenknecht’s newly formed party (BSW) now falls to 4%, while the Left remains at 3%.

When asked about the direct choice of chancellor, CDU leader Friedrich Merz leads with 24%, followed by Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) with 18%, while Olaf Scholz is chosen by only 14% of respondents.

The AfD remains on a downward trajectory in the polls following revelations about contacts with neo-Nazi organizations and joint development of a plan to force mass deportations of immigrants from Germany. In the same context, the head of the French National Alarm, Marine Le Pen, distanced herself from the party. According to the leader of the AfD Parliamentary Group Alice Weidel, in a recent personal meeting between the two the climate was “less tense”, while “many points of identification” were found. The subject of the meeting was Mrs Le Pen’s threat to exclude the AfD from the joint “Identity and Democracy” group in the European Parliament following the revelations. “We found ourselves seeking the same solutions to the big problems of our time,” Ms. Weidel wrote in a post on the X platform, while her spokesman said the meeting, which took place in a Paris restaurant, was about “unity of the group and the upcoming European elections”.
