Wimbledon’s famous tennis tournament does not intend to close its doors to Novak Djokoviceven if it remains unvaccinated, unlike other major Grand Slam tournaments this year in Melbourne and New York.
One day after statements of the top tennis player on the BBC that he is not going to be vaccinated against the coronavirus even if that means he will miss big tournaments like Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the English seem ready to welcome him with open arms, with an obvious advantage in terms of spectacle and financial benefit.
Former tennis player Tim Henman, once Britain’s top and England’s greatest hope of having a child of his own at the London tournament (Andy Murray is from Scotland) reaching the semi-finals, told the BBC that Djokovic could negative coronavirus test to play at Wimbledon.
Mr Henman, who is a board member of the All England Tennis Club, the Wimbledon organizer, explained that the event would follow state guidelines for entry into the UK. These (for the time being) allow anyone who takes a test and tested negative to enter both before leaving and after arriving in the UK, without the need for vaccination or even a quarantine period.
“To enter the United Kingdom right now, there are specific guidelines, and these tournaments will follow,” Mr Henman said.
In contrast, both in Australia, where Djokovic was deported from in January, and in the United States, where the New York Open will take place this summer, those who are not vaccinated are barred from participating in sporting events, even with some health exemptions for the sick and others.
At the same time, in France, the security rules seem to be relaxing a bit, and Djokovic is expected to be able to play in Roland Garros as well.
Djokovic is now the only tennis player in the top 100 in the world who has not been vaccinated against the coronavirus at all.
According to the British newspaper Daily Telegraph, if Djokovic finally fights at Wimbledon, he can not expect support from the public, on the contrary, he is expected to become a target of disapproval.
