Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed “the people’s true heroes” fighting in Ukraine in his Defender of the Fatherland Day message a day before the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia celebrates Defender of the Fatherland Day every year on February 23, with this year’s celebration coinciding with Russian military victories in Ukraine.

In a video published today by the Russian presidency, Putin paid tribute to those “participating in the special operation” in Ukraine, who, according to him, are “fighting for truth and justice” “defending Russia”.

“You are the authentic heroes of the people,” he emphasized.

“In recent years, the companies of the military-industrial complex have increased the production and delivery to the troops of the weapons that are in the greatest demand,” Putin added, referring to deliveries of missiles, drones, armored vehicles, artillery systems and anti-aircraft defenses.

“Based on our current combat experience, we continue to strengthen the armed forces,” he noted.

As every year the Russian president will visit the monument of the unknown soldier, near the Kremlin.

Three weeks before Russia’s March 15-17 presidential election, Putin delivered his message for the day, with the Russian military in a better position in Ukraine than last year.

Russian troops a few days ago put under their control the city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, where fierce clashes have been raging since the fall. Also on Thursday, the Russian army announced that it had captured the village of Pobieda, also in eastern Ukraine.

At the same time, the shelling of Kiev continues, with the general staff of the Ukrainian army announcing today new Russian attacks during the night with drones and missiles. At least three people were killed in Odessa by Russian shelling last night.

Russia has suffered heavy casualties since the start of the war, with up to 120,000 dead, according to US sources. But it managed to recruit almost half a million men in 2023 and another 53,000 in January 2024, according to official figures.
