5 toxic workplace habits that could harm your mental health

by

It is a fact that the pandemic has brought many changes to the way we work and has also led many of us to adopt some rather toxic habits.

From endless hours of work to completing a million tasks at once, the uncertainty of the last two years has left many people struggling to find balance.

In fact, according to new research from Bupa UK, this increase in harmful habits in the workplace does not seem to say goodbye soon.

In fact, analysis of Google search data revealed that by the end of 2021, hundreds of employees in the UK were turning to search engines for advice on managing these habits, with a 53% increase in searches for “years procrastination “between November and January only.

Other toxic habits whose searches have increased include multitasking (up 50%), workplace stress (up 30%), signs of burnout (up 22%) and difficulty making decisions (which increased by 14%).

As all five of these habits are likely to have a huge impact on your mental health, well-being, job satisfaction and productivity (which contribute to your overall happiness at work), it is important to address these issues and make changes to get rid of these harmful habits that occurred or worsened during the pandemic.

Indeed, as Lauren Gordon, Bupa’s head of behavioral cognition, explains: “It simply came to our notice then. “We have found that most of us search for these toxic habits on Google and it is more important than ever to know how to overcome these negative traits. For example, feeling exhausted, making more mistakes and experiencing brain fog are all symptoms of “difficulty making decisions” and can lead to lower levels of productivity.

However, the news is not so bad.

Because while it is clear that many employees struggle with toxic habits at work, there are several ways to break these bad habits – and put more positive ones in their place.

You may already know everything about the benefits of setting boundaries – but actually setting those boundaries is a whole other matter.

If you find it difficult to disconnect after work and worry about it even in his sleep you should start the changes. It is important to take time out of your day to disconnect from work and to spend time with yourself doing activities that give you joy, such as meeting friends and relatives.

Collaborate and connect with others.

Collaborating with other people and sharing ideas is a great way to increase motivation and create a positive environment that makes you feel good.

“Collaboration can help stimulate innovation and create new ways of thinking. “Communication is also an important part of building a positive work atmosphere,” Gordon explains. “Taking the time to connect with your co-workers can help boost team morale and reduce stress levels.”

Use stress management strategies.

If you do not have any stress management strategies in mind that you can use when you need it, now is the time to start learning them. “Mindfulness is the practice of being in the present moment and is a useful technique for reducing stress in the workplace,” explains Gordon. “Practicing awareness during the work day can help you stay focused and use your time more efficiently. You could also try a short breathing exercise which will also help reduce stress at that time. Your favorite hobbies (running, gardening and crafts for example) can also help.
